Professor Joe Brownlie
Celebrated infectious disease specialist, Professor Joe Brownlie FRCVS, CBE, is the celebrated Emeritus Professor of Veterinary Pathology with the Royal Veterinary College. He is also Director of the Southern African Centre Infectious Diseases and Surveillance. A graduate of Bristol Veterinary School, and his career has been mostly devoted to investigating infectious diseases, particularly Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD). His work has been essential in the creation of the BVD vaccine.
When asked about his talk in an interview for Cattle Quarterly, he said “I’m telling a story and hope to entertain anyone who will listen. It would be great to have young graduates to listen; that would be a treat for me as I may not give many more public lectures. I would love to see some of the older faces that I have known for many years but, in truth, they have heard all my jokes before!” You can read the full interview in the summer edition of Cattle Quarterly – landing on door matts and our website at the start of August.
Dr Reinaldo Fernandes Cooke
Dr. Reinaldo Fernandes Cooke is the Burkhart Endowed Professor for Beef Cattle Research in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, where his work helps shape how the beef industry approaches animal health and productivity, both in Texas and around the world.
Dr. Cooke's path to this role began in his native Brazil, where he earned a B.S. in Animal Sciences from São Paulo State University in 2003. What started as plans for a career in consulting shifted during his undergraduate years, when he discovered a genuine passion for research. That discovery led him to the University of Florida, where he completed an M.S. (2006) and Ph.D. (2008) in Animal Sciences. He then launched his academic career at Oregon State University, spending nine years as Assistant and later Associate Professor and Beef Cattle Specialist before moving to Texas A&M in 2017 to be closer to the heart of the U.S. beef industry.
At Congress Dr Cooke will review the biological mechanisms underlying stress responses in beef cattle and reveal practical, research-based approaches to mitigate their impact.
